Buzkashi is a kind of no-rules polo played with a dead goat. The
competition which are being visited by our tourists takes place annualy
in March and coincides with New Year (Navrouz) celebration in Central Asia.
Let's see the "Buzkashi" show: It is one of the old traditions
of Uzbek people. The best "chavandozlar" (horsemen) physically
strong and courageous men chosen from each village prepare for this
ancient competition. Riders are required to catch up to the leader
and take the dead goat from him. "Chavandoztar" are gathered
at the starting line with horses. The manager of the "Buzkashi" throws
the dead goat into the ring under the horses' hooves.
A dense wall of "Chavandozlar" moves forward and chaos
reigns as every one tries to move to the center and grab the carcass.
One "Chavandoz" in a striped jacket grabs the goat and
escapes the mass of horsemen with a piercing shout. The rest of the
riders try to catch up to him. One of them manages to overtake. The
leader is staying on his horse. He grabs the long wool of the goat
but can not hold into carcass. Risking a fall under the horses one
of them grabs the goat and gallops towards the pole. He must gallop
around the marked spot and then on finishing line in order to win.
The others are approaching him from all sides. The struggle begins
and the shouts of both excited spectators and participants are drowned
by the clatter of the horses' hooves. The horse of the winner moves
fast and the end of the game is near - one of the "Chavandoz" is
winning. Anxiously he clutches the dead goat and throws it over the
line. The spectators cheer enthusiastically as the winner is presented
with the prize.
